Camtasia alternative for Windows, without the subscription

TechSmith moved Camtasia to an annual subscription with the 2025 release, and several universities announced the end of their campus licenses during 2026. If you record tutorials or product demos on Windows and do not want a yearly bill for it, here is what Ciakko does, what it does not, and when Camtasia is still the better tool.

In one glance

  • Price model: Camtasia 2025 and later by yearly subscription; Ciakko bought once, $89.
  • Editing: Camtasia is a full timeline editor; Ciakko edits the recording for you and lets you adjust it.
  • Where Camtasia wins: quizzes for training, a large library of effects, a Mac version.
  • Where Ciakko wins: automatic zooms on your clicks, cleanup of pauses and filler words, captions made on your PC, editing with Claude.

What changed with Camtasia

Camtasia was for years the program people bought once and used until the next big release. With Camtasia 2025 TechSmith switched new versions to an annual subscription; a perpetual license you already own still runs, but it stops receiving the releases that keep it working with new versions of Windows and new graphics drivers. For a team that records every week the subscription is a line in a budget. For a teacher, a founder or a creator who records a few videos a month, it is the reason to look around.

Two different ideas of editing

Camtasia gives you a timeline and a box of tools: you place every zoom, every callout and every cut yourself. That is its strength when you want full control and its cost when you have twenty minutes of recording to turn into a video. Ciakko starts from the other end. When you stop recording, the zooms are already placed on the things you clicked and typed, the cursor is redrawn smooth, the pauses and the "ehm" moments are proposed as cuts, and the captions are one button away. You review, move what you do not like, and export.

What Ciakko does for a tutorial

You record the screen, a window, an area or a page in the Ciakko browser, with your microphone, the computer sound and the webcam on separate tracks. Then: automatic zooms that follow the action; cuts proposed for silences, filler words and the retakes you marked with a key while recording; cutting by deleting words from the transcript; captions written on your PC with Whisper, in six styles, with an .srt file; a voice over you type for the parts you did not say; chapters in YouTube's format; a vertical Short from a stretch of the long video; a 1280x720 thumbnail; export in 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1 from the same take. If you use Claude, it can do the editing for you through the same tools.

When to stay with Camtasia

Stay if you build training for a learning platform and need quizzes and clickable hotspots, if your team works on Macs, or if your videos rely on the transitions and motion presets you have built up over years. Stay too if the subscription is paid by your employer and nobody minds. Ciakko is not a general video editor and does not try to be one.

When to switch

Switch if you record tutorials, walkthroughs or product demos on Windows, spend more time placing zooms and cutting pauses than recording, and would rather pay once. Try it on the next video you have to make: the trial is the full product for 14 days, without a card and without a watermark, so the video you make during the trial is a real one.

Questions about leaving Camtasia

Is Camtasia subscription only now?

For new versions, yes. TechSmith announced that from Camtasia 2025 it is sold as an annual subscription and that new perpetual licenses are no longer offered for those versions. A perpetual license you already own for an older version keeps working.

Can I keep using my old Camtasia without paying again?

Yes. An older perpetual version keeps running on the computer where it is activated. What you give up is the new releases and their fixes, which matters most when Windows or your graphics drivers change.

Is there a Camtasia alternative with a one-time purchase?

Yes. Ciakko is sold once for $89, with 12 months of updates and up to 3 computers. When the updates period ends the app keeps working on the last version you have.

Is there a free Camtasia alternative?

OBS Studio records the screen for free and ShareX captures clips for free. Neither edits the video for you: the zooms, the cleanup and the captions are your work in another editor.

Can Ciakko replace Camtasia for training videos with quizzes?

No. Camtasia has quizzes and interactive elements for training platforms, and Ciakko does not. Ciakko is for tutorials and product demos that are watched, not graded.

Does Ciakko run on a Mac?

No. It is built for Windows 10 and 11 only. Camtasia runs on both Windows and Mac.
