Descript alternative for screen recordings on Windows

Descript made a simple idea popular: edit a video by editing its text. If what you record is your own screen, a tutorial or a product demo, you can have the same way of working with a recorder that also places the zooms on your clicks, writes the captions on your PC and is bought once. This page says where Ciakko fits and where Descript is the better choice.

In one glance

  • Same idea: cut by deleting words from the transcript, remove filler words and pauses in one pass.
  • Different focus: Ciakko is a screen recorder first, with automatic zooms and a redrawn cursor.
  • Where it runs: transcript and captions on your PC with Whisper; Windows 10 and 11 only.
  • Where Descript wins: podcasts, files recorded elsewhere, team review, voice cloning, Mac.

Editing by the transcript, for screen recordings

When you stop recording, Ciakko can write the transcript of what you said, with the time of every word. The Script view shows it as text. Select a sentence you would rather not have said, press Del, and that stretch is cut from the video, picture and sound together. Nothing is lost: the cut can be restored, and Ctrl+Z works as everywhere else in the editor.

On top of that, Clean up looks for silences of 0.8 seconds or more and for filler sounds such as "ehm" and "uhm", and proposes each one as a cut. You accept them all, reject them all, or go through them one by one. Every cut lands on a quiet instant with a short fade, so the voice does not click.

What a screen recording needs that a podcast does not

A tutorial is watched for the screen. The viewer needs to see the field you filled and the button you pressed, which on a recording of a large monitor is a few pixels wide. Ciakko records your clicks and your typing with the picture, so the zooms are placed on them by themselves, and it draws the cursor again, smooth and larger, instead of baking it into the pixels. Idle stretches where nothing moves and nobody talks can play at three times the speed. These are the steps you would otherwise do by hand in a general editor.

Captions written on your PC

The transcript and the captions come from Whisper running on your computer, on an NVIDIA graphics card when there is one and on the processor otherwise. The models are downloaded once, on request. Six caption styles are ready, from a plain line to the large three word captions of Shorts, and an .srt file is saved next to every export for YouTube.

When Descript is the better tool

Choose Descript if you edit podcasts or interviews, if the material comes from a camera or another recorder, if a team reviews and comments on the same project, or if you want an AI copy of your own voice to fix a word. Its audio tools for spoken word recordings go further than ours, and it runs on the Mac. Ciakko does none of that and is not trying to.

When Ciakko is the better tool

Choose Ciakko if you record your own screen on Windows, want the zooms, the cursor and the cleanup done before you start editing, prefer the transcript to stay on your computer, and would rather pay once. If you work with Claude, it can do the transcript edit for you: it reads the words, looks at the frames and proposes the cuts in the editor, one undo step at a time.

Questions about switching from Descript

Can I edit a video by deleting words from the transcript without Descript?

Yes, for screen recordings. In Ciakko the Script view shows the transcript with word times; select words, press Del, and that stretch leaves the video. The cut can be restored at any time.

Is there a Descript alternative that works offline?

For the transcript and the captions, yes. Ciakko writes them on your PC with Whisper, so the recording is not uploaded to be transcribed. The voice over is the exception: its text goes to Microsoft Azure Speech to be read aloud.

Is there a Descript alternative without a subscription?

Ciakko is bought once for $89, with 12 months of updates and up to 3 computers, and keeps working after the updates period ends.

Can Ciakko edit a podcast or a video I recorded elsewhere?

No. Ciakko records and edits its own screen recordings. You can place video clips and images inside a take, but it does not open a podcast or a camera file to transcribe it. For that, Descript is the right tool.

Does Ciakko clone my voice?

No. The voice over uses Microsoft Azure voices that you choose from a catalogue; you type the text and it is read aloud. It is not a copy of your voice.

Which languages does the transcript understand?

Whisper detects the language you speak and writes in it, so the transcript and the captions are not limited to English. The quality depends on the model you download and on the language.
